I’m interrupting normal service for a special announcement.
A few days ago, Scott and I got engaged. You know, to be married and all that.
Having the unqiue situation that we do (both being from different countries) the topic of marriage has inevitably come up, usually in reference to visas and “settling down” in one particular spot long term. But it definitely came as a surprise to me when Scott popped the question in our beloved Vondelpark while we were picknicking with the Basset the other day (we were picknicking, she was sniffing).
I probably won’t divulge any more details, lest I should bore the pants off anyone who doesn’t really care and also because some things are better kept as special personal moments, but needless to say that I guess we proved all the naysayers wrong. Long distance relationships can and do work – as does travelling with someone 24/7 for two straight years. We managed to not kill each other during either of these feats, so I’m hoping this means we can handle anything.

Congrats! I hope the two of you are still celebrating. Travelling and being together 24/7 can be tough on a relationship. I went travelling for a year with my boyfriend – and now we are married. It really did make us stronger.

Huge congratulations to you and Scott!
As an American who’s been married to an Aussie for 10 years, and bounced around loads- yes it can work and you’ll continue to have lots of happy times together! π

If you can travel with someone without ripping the head off of them, lock them in. People show you who they truly are when engaged in stressful travel situations! I’m so very happy for you, congratulations! Looking forward to hearing more details!

That is such terrific news – CONGRATULATIONS! The geography challenge often arises, even if you don’t anticipate it. Look at military families! My husband travels pretty much every week, and we joke about him not living here sometimes. It’s all about being committed to making it work.
