Skiing and snowboarding are a great way to let off some steam with friends or family. Whether you’re escaping to the Alps or the Scottish Highlands, there’s no time to waste when you book a last minute ski holiday. With a few days or even hours before your flight, it’s time to pack smart and fast.
With a bit of strategy, you can ensure you’ve got everything you need without cramming your suitcase to the brim. Here’s what to pack.
Essential ski gear
If you own skis or a snowboard, it’s best to pack them in a proper bag. If you’re renting equipment at the resort, you can leave these at home, but make sure to double-check rental availability in advance.
Ski poles and helmets can also be rented but experienced skiers often prefer their own for comfort and familiarity. If you have your own boots, wear them during your journey to the resort or carry them in your hand luggage to avoid the nightmare scenario of lost baggage.
A high-quality set of goggles is critical for visibility in bright or snowy conditions. These aren’t usually available to rent, so pack yours to avoid squinting your way down the slopes.
Ski clothing
When it comes to clothing, a jacket and pants should be your first priority. Opt for waterproof and breathable materials, as you’ll need protection from both snow and sweat.
Having plenty of base layers – both tops and bottoms – is key for staying warm, as they wick moisture and are your first defence against cold. A fleece layer adds necessary insulation, and you’ll appreciate having one or two in rotation for evening wear as well.
Ski socks are often underappreciated, but they make all the difference. Bring several pairs to keep your feet warm and dry. Cold wind can cut through you on the lifts, so don’t forget a hat or beanie, a neck warmer or scarf and a pair of waterproof gloves or mittens will help you stay warm throughout the day.
Casual clothing
Off the slopes, you’ll want to be comfortable. Bring a pair of sturdy, comfortable shoes for walking around the resort, as well as jeans or trousers and a selection of casual tops for evenings out. Sleepwear should be warm and cosy, given the chilly mountain nights.
Additionally, remember to pack swimwear if your accommodation has a hot tub or pool, as there’s nothing like a relaxing dip after a day on the slopes.
Toiletries and personal items
The sun on the mountain can be brutal on unprotected skin, so using slope-appropriate sunscreen and lip balm with SPF will help you prevent painful sunburn from the sun’s reflection off the snow.
Don’t forget the basics, such as toothbrush, toothpaste and shampoo. It’s also worth packing a small first aid kit for minor scrapes or blisters.
Travel essentials
Finally, don’t leave home without must-have documents like your passport, insurance details, lift passes and accommodation information. Having some cash handy is always a good idea for small purchases, but ensure you carry your cards for larger spending.
And of course, your mobile phone and charger are always essential for staying connected and navigating the resort.
By packing the items we’ve outlined above, you’ll be ready to hit the slopes without a hitch. Wear your bulky items like your ski jacket and boots while travelling to save space in your luggage.
Rolling clothes instead of folding them will maximise space in your suitcase, and packing socks or small items inside your shoes helps utilise every inch of your bag.
