As with any of my “what to eat in…” posts this is of course not an exhaustive list of what to eat in Stockholm – it is a mere snippet of the best things to pass my lips during my five day visit there earlier this year.
Some of the dishes and establishments on this list were planned and salivated-over ahead of time (added to the Google map for any city I’m about to visit); some were unexpected delights that were stumbled-upon once there. I can personally vouch for all of them, although I expect you to book your own flight to experience them for yourself without my say-so!
Meatballs (of ALL kinds) at Meatballs for the People
Meatballs for the People is a culinary gem nestled in the heart of Södermalm. This cozy eatery specializes in the art of Swedish meatballs, serving up delectable variations crafted with meticulous care and top-quality ingredients. The menu offers an array of options, from traditional to innovative – I opted for the chicken version, which were just as juicy as their pork or beef counterparts ever could be, but they also offer deer, moose and even rooster! This place is *always* busy (and rightly so), so expect a wait for a table.
All Kinds of Fried Chicken at Bird City
Buttermilk fried chicken with bourbon hot honey? Nashville hot chicken sando with cream cheese slaw? Seoul fried cauliflower? Bird City has it all and more. It’s a wonderful Asian-fusion fried chicken joint with style AND substance and we were thoroughly impressed with every single dish we ordered.
Pizza at Omnipollos Hatt
Never did I think I would be recommending the pizza at an independent brewery bar, but the ones at Omnipollos Hatt are seriously that good. From the unique topping combinations (I’m still dreaming about the potato, anchovy, olive and rosemary pizza, not to mention the vanilla-marinated apricot pieces on the one with provolone and pancetta) to the cool atmosphere and the delicious creamy-topped beers, we visited this place three times during our visit because we couldn’t get enough!
The Princesstarta at Vette Katten
I’ve already written a whole post about this cake, so I won’t repeat myself here, but needless to say that in a city full of delicious – and creamy – cakes, this was definitely a worthy one.
Anything at Lisa Elmqvist
Ok, so I’m clearly being a little flippant with the title of this one, but truthfully I don’t think you could go wrong with whatever you order here. Lisa Elmqvist is a legendary seafood haven nestled in the historic Östermalmshallen market. With a heritage dating back to 1926, it’s an institution known for its uncompromising commitment to top-quality, locally sourced seafood. The menu showcases an array of maritime delights, from fresh oysters to succulent fish dishes, all prepared with exquisite skill and a touch of Swedish culinary finesse. The smoked salmon was melt-in-the mouth divine and my main course of baked char with pork belly, Jerusalem artichokes and red wine gravy was inspired.
