Whether you’re already committed to a plant-based lifestyle, you’re trying Meat-Free-Mondays or you’re just wondering what all the fuss is about, sticking to a vegan lifestyle whilst you’re abroad and on holiday might seem a little daunting. Is it easy to stick to? Will there be any options?
Believe it or not, some of the most vegan-friendly places on the planet are actually not based in the UK. So, your ability to stick to your chosen lifestyle might be easier than you think! If the vegan diet isn’t something you’ve tried yet, then heading abroad is the perfect opportunity to give it a go!
But first: Have you arranged your travel insurance yet? Having an insurance policy in place will keep you safe and protected whilst you’re abroad. For the latest information on travel insurance check out uhcsafetrip.com before you travel.
Now read on for six tips for eating vegan when you’re on the road.
The Internet Is Your Friend
Before you travel, it’s a good idea to search for plenty of vegan hot spots at your chosen destination. Not only can you check out the menus, but double-check opening times and even their busiest times of the day so you can avoid the queues! Google is your friend, or you can download the app HappyCow which will show you reviews, menus and other recommendations in your area. TripAdvisor will also help you here or alternatively, if your host country has a tourism website, conduct a little research into their vegan scene (if any) on there.
Keep Your Accommodation in the Loop
You might not have plans to eat at your accommodation, but if you head back to your room after a busy day exploring then you might not fancy heading back out again to a restaurant. Before you book accommodation, see if they can accommodate your dietary requirements at their restaurant/cafe.
Check out Social Media
You may find that your chosen destination has a dedicated Facebook group that focuses on local vegan options, eateries, tips and reviews. Head online and see what you can discover, you may find that the locals in the area are more than happy to help.
Bring Your Own Snacks!
If you just want something to snack on between meals, then it might be difficult to find something convenient at a local store. Instead of making things stressful and needlessly difficult, bring your own snacks along with you. Nut butter, scones, rice cakes, cereal bars, vegan-friendly protein bars, nuts, granola, etc. – whatever you enjoy at home. If it travels well, then take it along with you. I have a great recipe for vegan scones that would keep well in an airtight container for a couple of days, or would be perfect as a snack to munch on during plane journeys!
Get to Grips With the Language
Knowing a few phrases in the local language will certainly be beneficial. That way, if you hit the local street markets and want to try something, you can ask the vendor with confidence. Discover local phrases describing certain ingredients or learn phrases that give people instructions about what you don’t want.
Catch a Vegan-Friendly Flight
When choosing an airline, make sure you pick one that provides a vegan inflight meal. That way, your travels get off to a good – and animal-product-free – start!
