When you travel as much as me you come to realize how important it is to have a nice room to come back to. If you have a spare room, redecorating it and renting it out to holidaymakers is a very effective way to make a little extra money. It is also nice to have people from different places staying with you, especially if you cannot travel much yourself anymore.
Fortunately, you will not have to spend much to turn your spare room into somewhere nice for visitors to stay. Here is a rundown of how to do it fast.
Empty the room first
If you can, completely empty the room and take a critical look at it, this will help you to identify what needs to be done. Pay particular attention to the little details like your lighting fixtures, skirting boards, door handles etc. If they need upgrading you can easily order what you need from places like skirtings r us.
Emptying the room will also make it far easier for you to get everything done. You will be able to work faster when you are not tripping over boxes and large items of furniture.
Paint the walls and ceiling
Painting the walls is by far the best approach. It can be done very quickly and will not cost much to do.
This YT video has some great tips that will help you to get the job done efficiently. These guys paint an entire bedroom in just 30 minutes. But, realistically it is going to take most people a couple of hours to do a similar job.
An easy way to finish off decorating your walls is to use some of your own travel photos. They will look great and are bound to spark conversations with your guests. I wrote a post about using your holiday snaps to decorate your home. Many of the ideas in that article will work really well for a holiday rental room.
Refresh the flooring
Nobody wants to stay in a room that has ropy old carpets. So, if yours is old or worn, replace it, ideally, with laminate or wooden flooring. That type of flooring is low-cost, yet durable and is super easy to keep clean. Plus, it will appeal more to travellers. In some parts of the world, carpets are seen as being impossible to keep clean. As a result, many travellers avoid booking rooms that have fitted carpets.
A nice bed
You need to be prepared to spend a bit of cash and buy a good quality bed. When choosing one try to see things from your guest’s point of view. Ask yourself if you were asked to sleep in a similar bed, would you be happy?
Ideally, you want your guests to wake up feeling refreshed. The chances are that asking your guests to sleep on an old or cheap bed is going to lead to negative reviews. You definitely do not want that.
How often you will be able to rent your room out and for how much will largely depend on how good the reviews are. Investing a little money now will pay off, in the long run.
Take good photos
Once you have finished revamping the room, take some good photos. Initially, it is these that will help travellers to decide whether or not they should be booking with you.
