Relax in the Lobby
The Hotel Alexandra Copenhagen is a design hotel, meaning that every space is filled with stylish pieces of authentic Danish furniture and chic fixtures. They also offer every guest a complimentary glass of wine during their stay, meaning that you can take the opportunity to relax in said furniture and peruse one of the many books from the hotel’s extensive collection. (There’s also an honesty bar in the lobby, so even once you’ve enjoyed your free drink, you can always purchase another).
When we were there, there were festive Christmas tunes playing in the lobby (I was in my element) which made for a really special atmosphere after it had gone dark outside.
Soak up all the Danish Cool in the Rooms
Each room is uniquely designed with Danish retro furniture, making it feel like you’re staying at your – ultimately much cooler – friend’s apartment.
We stayed in the Finn Juhl room, which was filled with authentic pieces designed by its namesake (if you don’t know of his work, Google him – you’re bound to recognize at least one piece of his iconic furniture). Not only did it give the room a ‘retro chic’ vibe, but it actually left us wanting to purchase some similar pieces for our own home. Danish furniture may look all angular and space-age but, damn it’s comfortable and sturdy.
Download the App
The Hotel Alexandra has its own app (available to download for free on iTunes and Google Play) which offers great tips about restaurants, bars, shopping and sights within the city.
I used it several times and it was a really good resource, especially for those times when you’re out and about and want to do a little research about where to go next from a locals’ perspective.
Take Advantage of the Central Location
Although Copenhagen is an easily walkable city, the location of your accommodation really is key. It is definitely cool to stay out in one of the up-and-coming trendy neighbourhoods and rub shoulders with the locals, but when it’s rainy and cold (which can be almost every day in winter), then walking miles will soon get boring.
The Alexandra couldn’t have been more centrally-located for our needs. It’s literally around the corner from Tivoli Gardens, less than 10 minutes’ walk from the Torvehallen food hall and less than 20 minutes’ walk from Nyhavn. There were only two times when we had to use public transport and that was to get out to the Carlsberg Experience and to get back from Christiania / Papiroen one very chilly evening.
And although the hotel’s located on a busy main road, you couldn’t hear the traffic in the room at all. It was actually really nice to be able to sit in the sofa or at the work desk and watch the world go by (as well as cheer on the office workers across the street as they attempted to decorate their desks for Christmas).
