Working while travelling (or being location independent) has not only been a revelation for me personally, it has become a huge international trend. The proliferation of people who work online while they travel around the world nowadays is truly staggering.
So, if you’re going to be like the legions of us out there who work while we travel, I have compiled a list of my favorite four things you are going to need to pack with you when you set off.
Laptop Stand
This is a biggie for me. Laptops and tablets are fantastic, but setting them up in a position that is good for your posture and your productivity can be problematic. That’s why I love laptop stands. They support your laptop at just the right angle to make working on it feel like toiling on a desktop and I have found this makes me much more productive. While you may have left the cubicle behind, you’ll be glad you’re back there (if only just momentarily) when you are trying to work on a really important project while travelling.
Organizing Implements
Keeping your possessions organized and neat while travelling is huge, especially for when you eventually take important stuff out and try to get things done. Yes, easily being able to identify what is what in your bags or suitcase will be a lifesaver for you, and sticky labels are probably the best way to divide your things. I like to put them on pretty much everything, helping me pack and unpack work stuff quickly when I get to my destination.
Wireless Mouse
This may be a given, but I have forgotten mine too many times (and suffered the consequences) to not put it on this list. Wireless mice save space in your bags (no wires!) compared to traditional mice and allow you to turn your tablet from a toy to a work tool in an instant.
WiFi Extender
We’ve all been in hotels or coffee shops where the signal is faint at best and non-existent at worst. Instead of requesting to switch rooms (hey, it’s been done before) or find another coffee shop, pack a WiFi extender. These handy devices help increase the range the WiFi network you’re using covers, thus allowing you to work faster, and most importantly, more efficiently.
Moleskine Notebook
I know this one is a throwback to a bygone age, but hear me out. For me, nothing replaces the feeling of writing a list of things to do, contact details of clients, or brainstormed ideas down on a pad of paper. A good moleskine notebook cannot be beaten, and when you look down at the end of the day and see a myriad of things-to-do crossed out, you’ll be glad you packed one.
