It seems that these days there are so many different ideas for hen party themes and locations, that the world truly is your oyster. As long as you and your “hens” have a decent-sized budget and a willingness to party, there’s nothing stopping you from having the wackiest and best party of your lives.
Since Scott and I got engaged earlier this year, the discussion of stag and hen parties (or bachelor and bachelorette parties to my American friends) has come up several times. With us both having friends and family based in two different countries, getting people together, especially when they have job and family commitments, is difficult. And I’m a bit past the age where just getting drunk in my home town passes for a great night out.
Plus, I’d love to incorporate my love for travel into all of the wedding proceedings if possible, so why not the hen party too?
That’s where I came up with the idea of an Around the World in 80 Days themed party which would take place over a whole weekend.
The invites would be designed out of old maps and each member of the group could wear something travel-themed or appropriate to any one of the stops along the journey.
The party would ideally take place in London, where the Phileas Fogg story begins (and, let’s face it, because London is awesome) – although I wouldn’t be opposed to heading to Goa for some sun (the characters in the story travel across India for three days by train).
For the first leg of the “journey”, the party would start at travel-themed bar Mr Fogg’s – as the name suggests, it’s the perfect place to sip a few cocktails during a Jules Vernes-esque hen party.
The next leg of the journey (which in the book takes place in India, as I mentioned) will see us eating some delicious Indian food in a colonial setting in the heart of Mayfair. A bit different from the streets of actual India, but hey, just work with me and my theme here, ok?
As Phileas then headed to Hong Kong, we will instead head to a blissful Asian-inspired spa, like the one at the Mandarin Oriental and indulge in a treatment fitting of the occasion – an Oriental Essence Massage perhaps?
With Japan the next stop on Fogg’s travel adventure, we would surely head out for some deliciously fresh sushi and sake, before maybe catching a drive-in movie at Alexandra Palace to round out the US leg of the book.
After a few drinks in the Mayflower pub, it would be back to London proper for a good old English breakfast (an all-day one, of course – because who knows what time these shenanigans will actually end!)
Of course this multi-stop hen party is probably little more than a pipe-dream, mainly because all of my friends would need to take out second mortgages to pay for it (and I haven’t even talked about accommodation and party props in this list!), but a girl can dream.
And even if I don’t manage to pull off this extravagant itinerary, I’d still like to incorporate certain elements of it into my party next year – such as the travel-themed bars and invitations or maybe even an exotic destination to hold it in.
Where would you on your hen party and would it have a travel influence?
