Confused Julia

A confused woman's guide to Northern England and beyond

Waffles with Snickers Sauce

waffles with chocolate peanut sauce

I am slowly getting used to life in the Netherlands. I love our new apartment and our neighbourhood (we had stayed in this neighbourhood twice before when we were housesitting) and I love the fact that I’m just a five minute walk from a main road filled with supermarkets, organic stores, coffee shops and restaurants.

But I can’t get used to not being able to find certain things in the supermarkets. Of course, every country has it quirks (remember when I didn’t have an oven in Turkey?), but they do take a bit of getting used to.

For example, yesterday I was looking in the baking section of the supermarket close to me (I use supermarket in a loose sense of the term, because it’s small – especially compared to US standards!) and they don’t sell vanilla extract.

I know, I heard you all draw a collective intake of breath. It’s ludicrous. What kind of baking section doesn’t stock vanilla extract?? The only close substitute is some sweet vanilla sugar sold in little packets and we all know that that isn’t really a substitute.

So then it got me worrying about Dutch people and their baking habits. Where are they buying their vanilla extract? Or are they just baking box mixes? Even worse, are they baking only non-vanilla-flavoured things? The horrific possibilities are endless.

So now my hunt for vanilla extract (and other over-priced imported foreign items) begins. I won’t sleep until I’ve discovered a method to this madness.

To help me get over this shock (I’m making my life seem pretty boring here, aren’t I?), I consoled myself with these super quick and yet tasty waffles with Snickers sauce. One benefit of living on continental Europe now is that I’m never too far away from good waffles (Hi Belgium! *waves*) and the pre-packaged ones sold in the stores here aren’t all that bad.

This dessert is so easy to make and perfect for those evenings when you realise that someone is coming for dinner and you have nothing to serve them. Three ingredients kind of easy. And sooo tasty.

Plus they don’t need vanilla extract, so I’m good. For now.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup cream (or full fat milk)

  • 2 Snickers bars (regular size)

  • 4 waffles (store bought or homemade)

Directions

  • Place Snickers bars and cream or milk into a small saucepan and heat on low until fully melted and combined. Keep an eye on it as you don’t want it to burn.

Vanilla extract can be bought from Dille & Kamille (branches across NL) or specialist cookshops like DOK.

Ironically although you can hardly find it anywhere it’s almost all made in NL. Figure that one out…

Thanks for the tip! I actually ended up finding some in an organic shop, although it was a bit pricey.
