Shoes are sometimes the most difficult item to decide on when you’re going be taking an extended trip. You can often only choose from a small selection as they take up so much packing space (and hinder weight allowance restrictions), so you need to choose wisely. Investing in sturdy, more expansive brands will serve you well, but you only need around three pairs of shoes for any type of destination.
Here is what I took with me on my trip to help you decide on your shoes packing list.
Walking shoes / trainers
These are the most important shoes for any type of trip, in any kind of weather. You’re going to be doing a lot of walking (and that doesn’t include any hikes you may take) – pounding the pavements looking for your accommodation, walking to and from bus and train stations, taking walking tours, exploring your new city. As long as you keep them clean, you can even wear these shoes when you go out for meals and drinks. I can’t stress how important is it to be able to keep your feet comfortable and dry. My Merell shoes lasted me for the whole two years and were comfortable from day one. It totally changed my outlook on walking shoes, as before I’d thought they were ugly and uncomfortable.
Flip flops
If you can, pack two pairs of flip flops: one cheaper rubber pair to wear in any communal showers or bathrooms or at the beach / pool and a sturdier, smarter pair to wear out and about. When the weather’s warm both day and night (as in most parts of Asia), then you’re going to want to wear flip flops most of the time. But, if the worst should happen and one pair should break, it’s a good idea to have another as a backup. I packed a pair of leather sandals and a pair of black rubber flip flops. For comfort and a good range of colours, I’d recommend Reef or Havaianas. If you’re anything like me, you’re not going to want to walk around a communal bathroom with bare feet, so a cheap plastic pair that are waterproof are always a good addition to your suitcase or backpack.
Pair of flats / smart sandals
I always like to pack a smart pair of ballet pumps or sandals to wear on nights out. If I’m wearing a nicer dress or skirt, I don’t want to wear clunky walking shoes, so it’s good to have a pair of shoes that are easy to pack and look smart. If you can find ones that bend or are easy to fold, such as Tieks or Victoria’s Secret, then even better.
Boots
If you can avoid taking boots then I would recommend doing so, as they are usually heavy and difficult to pack. If you’re going to be travelling in cold climates, then a pair of sturdy ankle boots or UGGs may be necessary. Try and invest in ones with a good sole that are waterproof and comfortable. Again, comfort is of the utmost importance, as is keeping your feet warm and dry.
