So, recently I’ve been making some quite big decisions. Grown-up decisions that I haven’t had to make in a while. Decisions like where I want to live this year. Gulp.
Things have been hectic, to say the least. As much as my heart loves to travel, my body and mind need some routine and time to unwind. It’s time to temporarily put down the backpack for a while (only a while) and start a new adventure: being an expat!
I’ll be disclosing more information about it soon, but basically, while I was trying to decide where I wanted to give a go at living, I had to narrow it down to some of my favourite places in the world. And a few places that I’ve never been, but that I think would be perfect for me. My list looked a little like this.
Las Vegas
Ahh, Las Vegas. On numerous occasions I’ve written of my love for this crazy, frenetic city. I even managed to book flights to Las Vegas to start my round-the-world trip there, such is my love for this place. Back then, it felt like the start of something exciting, so what’s to say that I couldn’t live there for a while? As much as people think I’m crazy for wanting to live in such a true 24-hour city, I honestly think I would be happy there. And just think of all the buffets I could eat….
Austin
I’ve never been to Austin, Texas, but I just feel like it’s somewhere I would enjoy. Not only do they seem to have amazing food (especially Mexican food), which is extremely important to me, but they also have great weather and the fact that they hold SXSW every year means that the city draws a lot of artistic types to its neighbourhoods.
Amsterdam
Amsterdam is another of my favourite world cities. Having spent around two months there in the last two years, I can honestly say that I feel at home in the city. I love the people, the bikes, the canals and I can even put up with the weather (I am from Manchester, after all). I feel inspired when I’m there, which would make it an ideal place for me to get some quality work done.
New York
I know this list contains a lot of US cities, but what can I say? I love the US! New York is yet another city that holds a special place in my heart, and somewhere that I’ve been having a love affair with for around twenty years now. I love its vibrancy and the ridiculous amount of tasty food there. Even if I don’t live there this year, I can honestly see myself living there at some point in my life.
Berlin
I really enjoyed my time in Berlin during the Christmas markets last year. I also know several travel bloggers who live there and enjoy the city life. The food is diverse, and I can speak a little German, so I honestly think I would enjoy living there. My only reservation is that it can take a long time to get from one side of the city to the other using public transport, as fast as it may be, and I’m not sure how much I’d enjoy that on a daily basis.
So, after compiling this list, all that’s left for me to do is to actually decided where I want to try and settle down this year. No biggie. I’ll get back to you.
