Remember that time I made peanut butter dog treats for ya?
Well, I’ve been at it again.
Ok, so maybe they weren’t for you; they were for the furry pooch in your life. Same same.
I love making Holly dog treats almost as much as I love baking stuff for myself, mainly because I love seeing how excited she gets when she realises that that new-smelling-really-awesome thing that’s cooking is actually for her. And then I like to laugh as she drools when I give them to her. Is that mean?
Anyway, these cheese-topped chicken whole wheat dog treats smelled so good while they were baking that I was almost tempted to eat one myself. Almost.
Now, I know that some dogs are sensitive to cheese and so if that’s the case, you can just leave it off. If, however, you have a hound who’s got a nose for all things dairy, then go right ahead and add a little sprinkle on the top half way through baking. Also, if your dog is allergic to wheat flour, you can replace it with oats – just grind them up in a food processor to give them the same consistency as flour, or use half ground oats and half plain oats to give a different texture. I didn’t try this out with oats this time, but I know from similar recipes and reviews that it can work just as well.
Here’s Holly getting ready to dive into the air for one of these bad boys not long after they came out of the oven. She is literally licking her chops. It doesn’t get better than that.

minutesIngredients
2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour (oats or oat flour can be substituted)
1 egg
1 chicken Buillon cube
1/2 cup hot water
2 tbsp shredded mild white cheese (such as Swiss or Cheddar) – optional
Directions
- Preheat the oven to 350F / 180C.
- Dissolve the Buillon cube completely in the hot water and then combine in a mixing bowl with the flour and the egg. Once a dough has formed, tip it out of the bowl and knead it into a ball for a couple of minutes.
- Lightly flour a work surface and, using a rolling pin, roll the dough out to around 1/2 inch thick. Use cookie cutters or the top rim of a small glass to cut shapes out of the dough.
- Line a large baking tray with baking paper and place the dough shapes onto it, leaving at least an inch of space between each one. Bake the treats for 30 minutes.
- Remove the treats from the oven and top with a small sprinkling of cheese on top of each one.
- Bake for a further 30 minutes, then remove from the oven and allow to cool and harden.

You should definitely get a puppy! That way I can “ooh” and “aah” over your Instagram pics 😉 I am *so* close to getting another myself, because I really want Holly to have a playmate, but I want to wait and get a rescue dog who needs a good home once we’ve settled in one place for long enough!
