Wrapping up packages is a vital part of planning for the festive season, but what if it were holidays and not presents that we were referring to? That’s right – a trip away could be exactly what your family needs this Christmas.
No stressing in the kitchen over preparing the perfect meal, as all your food will be included. No digging the car out of the snow, but jumping in the pool instead. And no braving the shops to get presents as you will be able to pick up exotic gifts while you are away.
Where could we go?
The possibilities are endless when it comes to taking a break over the Christmas period, so decide whether you want to take a short flight to somewhere warm; go long haul for a holiday of a lifetime; or head north for a winter wonderland experience.
Short haul destinations, such as Portugal and the Balearic Islands, are great for families, as it means you don’t have to keep the kids entertained for hours on the plane. Once you get there, there will be plenty of sunshine to chase the winter blues away.
For many people, it can feel strange to go away over Christmas, meaning they will decide to go further and more spectacular with celebrations if they make the break. This means taking everyone off to Orlando to enjoy the festive period Disney-style at the theme parks or eating curry on Christmas Day in Goa. These are experiences you will never forget.
If the idea of sunshine at Christmas just doesn’t sit well with you, then the best thing to do is head to Lapland. This majestic destination, covered in snow and home to Santa Claus, should be on everybody’s bucket list.
The benefits of Christmas abroad
It may seem decadent going on holiday at Christmas, but it could save you money in the long run. The kids won’t be expecting big presents as they are getting a holiday instead and many destinations are cheaper, because they are out of season.
On a package holiday, just about everything is included, meaning you can miss out on doing that huge food shop and stocking up on beer. You will be choosing from a wide range of food at your resort, so you won’t have to force down the sprouts or buy in lots of alcohol.
Heating the house through the winter is getting increasingly expensive and you can use lots of fuel making sure everyone stays toasty. This really isn’t a problem if you are in a sun soaked destination.
Instead of wrapping, you will be packing and that is much more fun. Fantastic family memories will be made and everyone will return to work or school feeling relaxed and refreshed, ready to take on the New Year.
Tensions can often come to the surface when everyone is in each other’s pockets at Christmas, but if you are on holiday there is more potential for people to do their own thing. The activities on offer, whether they be watersports or sightseeing, will also help to give you all a focus.
Christmas away from home may not be something you decide to do every year, but you will certainly remember the year you did. And you never know, this change to your plans might be the start of a new annual tradition.
