New York is one of the world’s most iconic cities, and millions of people flock to this destination every year. The winter is a fantastic time of year to visit the Big Apple as there are a host of themed events and attractions to indulge in. With so much to do, you might find it hard to choose just what to put on your itinerary. Here are five things that shouldn’t be missed if you’re opting to explore the famed city during the cold season.
Holiday Markets
Every year, New York gets into the Christmas spirit by hosting a variety of holiday markets located throughout the city. They’re a great place to enjoy the festivities, whilst also providing the ideal time to get a few much-needed Christmas gifts. You’ll find markets in a range of places, including Union Square, Bryant Park and Grand Central Terminal. The latter is particularly good if the weather’s bad and you want to stay warm and dry inside. However, the best market can be found in Columbus Circle, which has a large cluster of stalls offering anything from food and beverages, to jewellery and winter wear.
Christmas Tree and Rockefeller Center Ice-Skating
No trip to New York is complete without a trip to the Rockefeller Center. Before Christmas, the iconic tree is erected outside, and a beautiful ice-skating rink offers the chance to indulge in a little winter exercise in the snow. Whether you’re skating, or are there just to take some pictures, it’s definitely a spot not to miss. There’s also a Magnolia Bakery just down the road, so you can enjoy in a cupcake or two for a bit of added luxury.
New York Aquarium
It might not sound like an obvious choice, but the winter is the ideal time to visit the New York Aquarium. You can use a US car rental to make the quick journey around New York to Coney Island, and once there, you’ll be able to enjoy fewer tourists and crowds at this time of year. The attraction is the only aquarium in New York and boasts a shark tank, Sea Lion Aqua Theatre show and the Alien Stingers exhibition. It’s fun for all the family and if you decide to visit on a Friday afternoon, the admission price is simply a donation of your choice.
Times Square Ball Drop
If you’re lucky enough to be in the Big Apple for New Year, then the only place to be is Times Square. Every year, hundreds of people cluster into the square on December 31st to see the huge ball dropped as the clock strikes midnight and the New Year is ushered in. The first street closures start around mid-afternoon, so it’s a good idea to head to Times Square before 3pm if you want the best spot. There’s a lot of revelry to be enjoyed in the lead up to the iconic moment of the clock striking 12.
New York City Beer Week
Finally, if you’re heading out to New York after Christmas, then the time to go is in February. In 2014, the city will host the 6th Annual New York City Beer Week. Opening with a Friday night party at Grand Central Station, the week kicks off from February 21st. In 2014, celebrity chefs, national and international breweries and acclaimed restaurants will all come together to share their beverages for 10 days. There’s a lot to sample and much merriment to be had at this increasingly popular event. For beer festival lovers, the New York City Beer Week shouldn’t be missed.
