After popping the cork to enjoy a fine glass of wine, tossing empty bottles into the rubbish bin might be the easiest and most logical way of disposing it. But wine bottles, truly elegant on their own, can be re-purposed to create useful and decorative elements for your kitchen or your home.
First, you may want to check if your area has regulations on bottle handling and deposit, or if there are recycling centres near you. This will help you manage glass waste in case you have broken bottles at home. Also, a new trend of packaging bottles has emerged to help mitigate problems with bottle disposal. M&S was one of the first retailers to use PET wine bottles (or Polyethylene terephthalate), which are essentially materials that are meant to be recycled after their use. And if you like DIY and have the time to get crafty, clean out your empty bottles and get started!
Create a romantic wine bottle candle holder. There’s no denying that a simple candlelit dinner creates a dreamy ambience that everybody truly enjoys. To make your own candle containers, simply place a double-sided tape at the bottom of the candle and carefully insert it to the mouth of the bottle. You can cut out the bottom part of the bottle and place it over a larger candle of your choice.
Use wine bottles as food storage. Because wine bottles are naturally tinted, it’s perfect for storing food and beverage that may run the risk of getting spoiled from exposure to sunlight. It’s also great for dispensing Olive oil that you usually buy in large containers, or maybe an extra storage for rice and pasta.
Design mosaic art as a dining centrepiece. It’s easy to achieve an art piece inspired by the stained glass windows at the Sistine Chapel. Using a hammer, lightly tap the bottle until you begin to see cracks. Take out each large piece and begin to hammer it into small pieces. Layout these pieces into a canvass or a transparent surface and secure them in place with a glass adhesive. Do this wearing shoes and gloves in a safe place, preferably outside of your home.
With these eco -friendly ideas to recycle your wine bottles, it wouldn’t be so hard crafting your own piece of glass art that will definitely keep your guests fascinated and astonished at your creative concept.
