One of the things I loved most about my visit to New Orleans earlier this year was the music scene. Music is at the heart of the city unlike anything else. Walking through the French Quarter and along Bourbon Street you can hear all kinds of different music genres, but the one that New Orleans is most famous for is jazz. Even non-jazz-lovers can’t help but be swept up by the rhythm and excitement that this type of music brings.
The best part about New Orleans’ love of music? That it’s one of the only places in the world where you will see a teenage boy walking down the street with a huge tuba over his arm looking proud. No-one is calling that guy a band geek; that’s just how it is in this city. Your musical instrument is a sign of respect and passion.
One evening as we left our hotel in the French Quarter, we heard loud music playing down the street. Upon investigation we found these guys – a group of young lads just out to make a few dollars doing what they love. People grabbed a beer-to-go (another great thing about NOLA) and sat on the streets to listen to them play. There’s not many places in the world you can do that.
