We almost went to Morocco. Yes, it’s true. When we were back in Amsterdam trying to decide on where to spend September, it basically came down to Turkey and Morocco. Turkey ended up winning out this time, but Morocco is still a place I really want to go. Once I get there, there are a few things that I know I will definitely have to see or do. What are those things? I am glad you asked.
Catch a Case of the Blues
Located in the northern part of the country, Chefchaouen would be an ideal first stop in Morocco. Against the backdrop of the stunning Rif mountains, Chefchaouen is known for being “the blue city”. Why? Well, the buildings in the town are known for being colored a combination of faded white and a haunting blue. The pictures I have seen from here are without a doubt some of the most inspiring anywhere on the travel photosphere ,and I would love to spend a couple nights here watching the sun trace against the blue buildings and sip mint tea.
Go Coastal
The coast and ocean may not be the first things that come to mind when you think of Morocco, but Morocco has a huge coastline and from what I’ve heard, there is a ton of fun in the sun to be had. The French-influenced town of Essaouira is one of the highlights of the coast and ’d love to go there and spend time admiring the watchtowers that ring the town’s signature fort. Another thing this city is known for is having great conditions for surfing. I’ll probably stop by Explora Morocco, who are a kitesurfing, windsurfing, and surfing shop that offer lessons and try my luck out on the water.
Frankly My Dear
There has to be something worthwhile in Casablanca, right? Right? Despite hearing much to the contrary, I would like to at least give the city that was made famous by Humphrey Bogart Ingrid Bergman a chance. It might end up being a brief stop, but I think it would be cool to be able to say that I saw Casablanca (in real life, as opposed to just on the TV at Christmas).
Save Room For Desert
Seeing the Sahara Desert is a must for my eventual visit to Morocco. The landscapes out there look otherworldly, and I have heard from many people it was the highlight of their travels anywhere in the world. The highlight for me would be spending the night in the desert. I’m sure the view of the stars from the desert has to be seen to be believed, and ideally we would time our trip with one of the big meteor showers so we could get a HD view of the streaking stars.
