We may have only been in Singapore last year for about three hours, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t make an impression on us. In those three hours, we liked what we saw and tasted enough to pique our interest about a return and we have recently been thinking a ton of Singapore. Sure, Singapore may be a small country, but it is known the world over as one of the richest jewels in Southeast Asia. It is a place where a long history of cultures mixing together has resulted in some of the most interesting and diverse cultures and cuisines in the region. Throw in the fact that this country has been at the forefront of the modern economy and is seen as one of the world’s financial powerhouses, and you have something really special.
So, why only three hours? Well, we arrived in Singapore after a quick flight from Hong Kong. After an exciting and sensory overloading six nights there, we were pretty tired. Had we been more with it, maybe we would have extended our stay by using our credit cards for a hotel like the famous Marina Bay Sands, but since we had tickets to leave Singapore that evening, we stuck with that plan as it seemed easier. Looking back, that might have been the wrong decision.
We did get to one of the famous food hawker centers for lunch though, and this was where we got to see Singapore at its finest. Scott was obsessed with tracking down some Laksa from a stall he had seen on television travel show, and after searching up and down the Golden Mile Food Hawker Center, we finally found it. The laksa was creamy, spicy, and full of shrimp and cockles. It was a mix of cultures coming together to form a beautiful dish, just like the historic side of Singapore. As our bus drove off under an orange-tinged Singapore sunset we were treated to a view of the breathtaking and aforementioned Marina Bay Sands hotel, a symbol of modern side Singapore.
Sure, we were only there for three hours, but we had tasted a bit of the city, and now we are hungry for another.
We’re hoping that Singapore can make an appearance on our itinerary for the beginning of next year, if only to go back and eat some more delicious laksa. And maybe finally get a swim in the infinity pool at the Marina Bay Sands. Now that would be something.
