Although many people coo over Novi Sad because of its pretty town square and contrasting architecture (gothic, beautfiul churches next to ugly 60s-style concrete blocks), I was not a fan of the city, preferring instead to spend most of my time in bigger, brasher Belgrade.
For me, Novi Sad lacked diversity and choice. The food on offer was mediocre and offered none of the international elements of the capital city and I found that there was actually little to do there. It didn’t help that for half of our time there I was ill, which definitely put a dampener on things.
My favourite part of the whole city was this cathedral, stood in the main plaza. It could be seen over the rooftops of the surrounding buildings and was a welcome distraction from the fast food restaurants close by.
If you’re heading to Serbia, I wouldn’t recommend skipping Novi Sad because, unlike me, you may actually enjoy it, but rather I would recommend it for a day trip. Go, snap some pretty pictures and then move on.
