I loved the quirkiness of Brussels.
From the funky bars and restaurants to unusual pieces of art and, of course, the peeing statues, no-one is quite as absurd as the Brusselians. And they revel in it.
I particularly found their devotion to the art of the comic strip fascinating, and the presence of many comic strip murals painted onto walls around the city just added to the great vibe of the city. You can even take a dedicated Brussels comic strip wall ‘walk’, taking in all of the murals at once.
They added an element of fun to almost every neighbourhood, even those that were less touristed. And they made you smile. They remind you not to take life too seriously, in much the same way that the people of Brussels don’t. Just like Manneken Pis, they have become a symbol of the city that is unique to Brussels. Here are just a few of the Brussels comic strip walls around the city, and are some of my favourites.
I also loved this one, which I don’t think was an “official” comic strip wall, but which was painted on the side of a building near our apartment.
