Just because I’m travelling long term right now (and have been for 18 months now – how scary is that?!), it doesn’t mean I don’t dream of having my own house again in the future.
In fact, I think that often times travelling actually makes you lust after a stable environment even more. It’s probably the picking up and moving on every few days/weeks, the different beds and bathrooms and the non-conformity of it all.
Ironic, really, considering how desperate I was to sell my old house.
I know that once I have a base again and am paying bills, I’ll probably be wishing I was travelling. I don’t ever plan to stop travelling, I just don’t plan on it being my constant lifestyle.
So, when I ‘m bored and dreaming of having a kitchen again, I like to turn to Pinterest for inpsiration on how I would like to decorate my dream house. How I’d ever be able to afford half of the stuff, I’m not sure.
But it’s nice to dream.
And I would definitely want to incorporate design elements from the different places around the world that I have visited.
Firstly, my bathroom (this is where a lot of hotels and hostels let themselves down and often where I wish I had my own). I want a nice big old-fashioned bath and antique bath vanities as well as cute little signs, baskets and accessories.
A rainfall shower wouldn’t go amiss either – I have loved using these in Asia and Europe.
In the bedrooms and hallways I would love to have some Mexican artwork and crafts. Having stayed in a couple of adobe-style houses in Mexico, I have fallen in love with this colourful and unique.
And there HAS to be a Day of the Dead skeleton in there somewhere too. No exceptions.
The kitchen would be my domain and although I would love it to contain pastel colours and cute designs, it would also need to be equipped with everything I would need to make all of the international food I have learned to cook in my travels. This would include a tortilla press, pizza stone, wok stove, bread and ice cream makers and every kind of cooking implement you can think of.
(See – I told you this was a “dream” house)
Lastly, the bedroom would have to be decorated in a European style – light, airy and with big mirrors and plenty of cool light fittings. There would also have to be at least one full-length mirror (this is something which is often missing in travel accommodation and it drives me mad – I need to be able to see whether my outfit co-ordinates or whether my shoes match!)
So, there you have it. My Cribs-style house, which I’ll never be able to afford, but which will be styled based around my travel experiences and tastes.
It’s a girl’s prerogative to dream. Dream big.
