It wouldn’t be a trip to New Orleans without a visit to the famous Cafe Du Monde, close to Jackson Square.
The menu is small and concise: they sell beignets (deep fried French choux pastry topped with icing sugar) and chicory coffee. We sampled both for breakfast one day.
The beignets at Cafe Du Monde are soft and chewy, but be prepared for the fact that you WILL get covered in icing sugar. If you don’t want to befall this fate, or indeed don’t like icing sugar (you’re surely a crazy person) then ask for them without. The chicory coffee is milky but not at all bitter-tasting as I had assumed it might be.
All in all a successful breakfast, although one that I wouldn’t want to repeat every day unless I was looking to induce an onset of diabetes. But hey, that’s what fun-filled road trips are all about, right?!
