Teetotum, Tulum. It’s a bit of a mouthful. Luckily for someone as greedy as me, so are their portions.
After a sweaty and exhausting trip to the local ruins, plus a bit of bike riding thrown in for good measure, I was ready for a damn good breakfast. Simply not satisfied by the measly cornflakes-and-bread combo at my hostel, I was craving eggs. And fruit. And avocado.
Having parked our bikes outside Teetotum that morning, and having seen it several times from the outside, we had assumed that the small restaurant at the front was just for guests of the attached hotel. By a stroke of genius, we decided to actually ask if this was the case and found out that it wasn’t.
Just perusing the menu, I had a feeling that this place would make my stomach happy. We ordered a fruit smoothie followed by a breakfast burrito for me and huevos rancheros for Scott.
What appeared at the table can only be described as a piece of art. It was arranged so delightfully, I almost didn’t want to eat it.
Yeah, right.
After a couple of mouthfuls I realised that, in fact, there was no avocado inside my burrito, which upset me greatly (due to my ongoing avocado addiction – am I repeating myself?!) I asked the waitress and she apologised profusely, sending my plate away and bringing it back with a large amount of avocado on top.
It no longer looked as pretty, as I’d already demolished some of it, but damn it tasted good. The habanero salsa that accompanied it was enough to give the contents of eggs and cheese and sour cream a good kick.
I was so busy enjoying mine that I didn’t think to ask Scott what his was like. Judging by his empty plate, I’d say he was just as happy as I was.
Needless to say, my appetite had been appeased. Well played, Teetotum.
