This July I’ll be flying in to Madrid from Mexico.
The only other time I’ve ever visited mainland Spain was a weekend jaunt to Barcelona a few years ago. There I sampled some of the delicious cuisine, including some tasty tapas, but I remember very few meals that actually knocked my socks off.
I guess it’s because back then I was less concerned with doing my researching and finding good deals (I know it’s hard to believe, but it’s true), meaning that I often found myself eating at tourist traps and choking down overpriced food.
This time, as I’m visiting a new city (although a quick jaunt over to Barcelona again may be in order), I’ve decided to compile a check-list of foods I really want to sample this time. I owe it to myself.
Patatas Bravas
I have only ever eaten patatas bravas at chain Spanish restaurants in the UK and while they have been passable, or even bordering on tasty, I can’t imagine they are anything like the real deal in Spain.
Migas
This one definitely intrigues me. According to Wikipedia it is “day-old bread soaked in water slowly fried with olive oil; often served with pan-fried pork ribs, green peppers, grapes, fried garlic, spicy sausage or sardines”. What’s not to like in that list?
Paella
Whenever I’ve tried paella in the past, I’ve been disappointed. Maybe it’s because I’m not a huge fan of squid (I find it too rubbery) and also because I don’t really like seafood served with the head and legs on (too fiddly in this type of dish). But I’m determined to find some paella that is as creamy as my beloved Italian risotto, with some delicious smoky chorizo or even a vegetarian version to omit all of the bodies.
Gazpacho
I have never tried gazpacho before. Maybe it’s the concept of cold soup which has always put me off, but yet there is something vaguely alluring about a refreshing bowl of liquid on a hot day (which I’m hoping it will be in July).
Churros
I have eaten many a sugar-covered churro in Mexico, but I have heard so much about the deeply rich chocolate sauce which accompanies Spanish churros that I can’t wait to much down on some.
Aside from the above, I’m also looking forward to eating plenty of cured meats and cheeses, drinking wine and sangria and sipping cafe con leche in streetside cafes while people-watching. Bliss.
