I’ve talked before about how the quality of your accommodation when travelling can really affect your experience of a place.
And Lord knows, we’ve come away from some cities with a pretty poor impression of them, mainly because of the accommodation we’ve stayed in.
But when you get it right, it can become one of the highlights of your trip. And that was exactly what happened when we visited Aviemore in Scotland.
We had decided to head there to go and see a live herd of reindeer which live in the mountains around the town (more to come on that later) and having had some bad experiences with hostels in Edinburgh, we really wanted somewhere comfortable and welcoming. And somewhere that preferably served a cooked breakfast in the morning. We found all of that at Dunroamin B&B.
From the moment we walked in we were made to feel like part of the family, with the owners Lorraine and Jim even giving us some bottles of beer to try from the local brewery that Jim works at (Cairngorm, in case you were wondering).
We couldn’t believe our luck when we saw our room. Our previous accommodation had been a cold and sparse room that smelled of paint (and had no WiFi access – a rookie mistake), but here we were greeted with a huge, soft, comfy bed. I almost died. We even had our own little Christmas tree in the corner of the room.
The next morning we headed down for breakfast and were greeted with a steaming pot of coffee and fresh fruit and yogurt. I probably shouldn’t have filled up on the healthy stuff so much though, because then out came a plateful of Scottish goodness. Sausage, eggs, bacon, black pudding….what more could a girl ask for? I hadn’t had a proper fry up since I had made a flying visit back home in June, so after six months, this was more than a sight for sore eyes.
Our days in Aviemore were spent eating, drinking and, well, eating some more. We also managed to finally get some work done and just really relax for a few days. And did I mention how comfy the bed was?
Of course when you are travelling long term it is difficult to always find or afford quality accommodation like this. But every now and then it is definitely worth the splurge. Especially when you can sit inside with a nice drink and watch the snow fall outside.
It doesn’t get much more Christmassy than that.
We were kindly given a reduced rate on our stay at Dunroamin B&B, but that in no way affected my opinions of the accommodation or the views expressed above. Dunroamin was genuinely a welcoming and cosy place to stay.
