Sometimes it takes something bad to happen to make you really appreciate what you’ve got.
In our case, what happened wasn’t that bad, but it certainly did make us appreciate the rest of our time in Budapest. Once we had left the Hostel From Hell, we suddenly started acting like real people. Real tourists. We were able to fully enjoy this beautiful city for everything it had to offer, without the stresses that working had placed on us.
And through these new eyes, I saw a city that is at once cosmopolitan, vibrant and lively, and at the same time steeped in a saddening history.
We visited the House of Terror museum (which may I say was one of the best museums I’ve ever been to. I’m not a big fan of museums, but this was designed and created in such a way that you felt drawn into the stories they were telling), we soaked our aching limbs in a thermal bath, we drunk beers on one of the majestic bridges as the sun set, we ate goulash soup and paprikash and a whole host of other wonderfulness, we went on a walking tour, climbed the citadel and so much more.
It’s amazing how a different perspective on a city can open your eyes to a whole new experience. And in this case, Budapest was everything I was hoping for.
