The UK is a great place for a gastronomic trip. I have a particularly sweet tooth so my favourite treats are usually the sweet and sugary ones!
Bakewell Pudding
I just love Bakewell puddings! Forget the packaged Bakewell tarts that you see in the supermarkets with fondant tops and a glace cherry on the top – the real thing is just so much better. Made with a flaky pastry base, topped with a layer of jam and an almond frangipane filling, they are just so delicious! A trip to the Peak District is a great opportunity to sample to the original delicious tart, but you will have to stay a while as there are a few bakeries in Bakewell who claim to have the original recipe. Just make sure you do plenty of walking to work all those extra calories off!
Victoria Sponge
Sometimes the simplest pleasures are the best and the Victoria Sponge cake is sure to be one of them. Named after Queen Victoria who liked a slice of sponge cake with her afternoon tea, this straightforward delight is made from sugar, butter, eggs and flour. It isn’t iced or decorated but it is a firm family favourite.
Grasmere Gingerbread
One taste of the warm, sweet and sticky Grasmere Gingerbread and you are sure to be hooked! Baked freshly everyday to Sarah Nelson’s traditional recipe for well over one hundred years it is still as delicious today as it always has been and is reason alone to take a trip to the Lake District. Originally sold to Victorian tourists visiting Grasmere, so much about the famous gingerbread remains exactly the same today as it always has been. The shop is still situated in the corner of the churchyard in Grasmere, the original kitchen is now a shop and the packaging remains the same with ‘None Genuine Without Trade Mark’ printed on it to remind customers that they are enjoying genuine Grasmere Gingerbread made with the age old recipe.
