As soon as I arrived in Croatia I realised that the cuisine is very similar to that of Italy.
This means that you can’t go anywhere without seeing pizza and pasta on the menu but it also means that you can get your hands on great, fresh pasta at the supermarkets for much cheaper than I would pay in the UK. As we found ourselves staying in a self-catering apartment in Cavtat, near to Dubrovnik, and wanting to save money, we decided we would cook every night and treat ourselves to restaurant food every lunchtime. Hence why I came up with this dish of gnocchi, pesto and delicious sweet chargrilled peppers.
It may not look like much, but it tasted damn good. The gnocchi was bigger and fluffier than I could usually buy at my local supermarket at home, and the peppers were tangy enough to offset the richness of the pesto. Overall, definitely a good effort using limited ingredients from a small local store. It made two meals for two people and only cost us around £3.40.
