Sister’s Crispy Popiah: so good we ate it twice. Ok, three times.
Having first read about these tasty wafer-thin spring rolls in Lonely Planet, I knew I had to try them out. Popiah can include a variety of fillings, but most usually the ingredients include a slightly spicy bean sauce, steamed turnip, bean sprouts, grated carrot, peanuts and fried shallots. At Sister’s, however, they have added a crispy component (there seems to be some confusion as to what exactly makes up this crispy goodness) but they are adament that their secret ingredients shall never be revealed. It’s this steely determination that has seen their brand take off from their humble beginnings at Bukit Bintang Wet Market to several stalls, outlets and Malay restaurants around Kuala Lumpur.
After unsuccessfully trying to roll out of bed to get to their stall at the morning breakfast wet market which shuts down at 11am, we hungrily went in search of their food outlet in the KLCC Mall. This turned out to be a wild goose chase, with staff who worked at the mall sending us in all different directions to find our feast. Eventually, and at a point of near-starvation, we found them at the back of the Rasa Food Court on the 4th floor. And boy, were we glad we had.
We shared a portion of two (RM6) between us and instantly fell in love with the taste.
So much so that we made it our mission to track down the original stall at the wet market the next morning.
I have to say that the popiah from the market were slightly superior in taste to those from the food court – whether simply it is because this is the original birthplace of the rolls or whether it is because the cheaper price here makes them taste just that bit sweeter (RM4 for two).
Before we left KL we got one more fix of the popiah, again at the KLCC food court (well, when you’re in the vicinity it’d be rude not to, right?).
Crispy popiah: so good we ate it thrice.
