Last week during my lunch break at work I decided to head over to the food tents in the centre of Manchester which formed part of a 10-day event celebrating local produce and businesses.
One of the great things about working in the city centre is that there is usually something like this on every month, although not always on this kind of scale. This was a big food and drink festival headed up by British chef Hugh Fearnley-Whitingstall (who we don’t like anymore because he said that meat-eaters should eat puppies, but don’t get me started on that story) and was spread across two of the main squares in Manchester city, with food carts, pop-up bars and shopping stalls.
I had been really craving a burrito, but then I spotted a stall selling hot chilli con carne and just had to get a takeaway box full.
I also spotted a smaller version of the hog roast and bar which usually only makes an appearance at the Christmas markets as well as some food trucks selling wood-fired pizzas and tapas, a brewery tent and a Hawaiian barbeque run by one of my favourite Hawaiian tiki bars in the city.
I love that the city regularly holds events like this, allowing local businesses to sell their products and allowing visitors to see how diverse the culinary scene is. Just from the stalls I looked at there was Mauritian, Halal Indian, Hawaiian, Mexican, Spanish and French cuisine and lots of beers brewed in and around Manchester.
Let’s just say it’s a good place for a food-lover (read: greedy person) like me to live 🙂
