Besides the elephant orphanage, one of the places I told Daggat I absolutely had to visit was Sigiriya Rock. It is an iconic Sri Lankan landmark and I was determined to cross it off my list of sights I had seen in this amazing country. Also known as Lion’s Rock, it has been used as a mountain monastery and palace and still retains some of the fascinating features of both, namely the foundations of the palace water gardens and swimming pools, fresco paintings and lion’s paws carved into the base of the rock. It is 1200 steps to the top of the rock and in such humid weather it was a pretty mean feat, so I will spare you the photos of me sweaty-faced at the top!
