There are a few things I can truly appreciate in this life. Good food. Good music. Good company. And if I can find all of these things in one place, well, that’s just a little slice of heaven. But often when you’re travelling it’s difficult to find a harmonious balance of all that you hold dear in your otherwise routine life back at home. For example, if you want good food back at home you know exactly where to go to eat. If it’s good music you’re looking for, you know all of the local venues and which bands you would prefer to see. Good company? Your friends are all on tap. It’s almost too easy…But when you’re in a foreign country meeting people who up until this point were nothing but strangers, how can you find that all-important mix of greatness? Read the guide book? Ask the locals? Or trust your instincts?
I like to think that good things come to good people and that life is whatever you make it. Therefore, if you’re in what would otherwise be described as a crappy bar listening to music even Justin Bieber would be embarrassed to have on his iPod, make the most of it. Do a silly dance. Sing along (as best you can). And have fun.
If you’re eating food that would never under any circumstances pass your lips on your own turf, just grin and bear it. For every bad meal when travelling, there’s at least 20 other amazing meals that will more than make up for it. And if the conversation isn’t exactly what you would call ‘sparkling’, change the subject. At the end of the day, you have chosen to throw caution to the wind and travel to experience something totally outside of your comfort zone and now you’re there what’s the point in moaning about it? So, my point is this. All food can be good food. All music can be good music. All company can be good company. IF you allow it to be. We’re all in this together, people. Life is short. Let’s remember only the good things and if they’re not so good then move on or put on your rose-tinted glasses and smile.
I hope you all look back on 2010 with fond memories and look forward to 2011 with travel in your hearts. <3
