On my recent US roadtrip to New Orleans, I knew we would be passing through Memphis just after breakfast time. And I really wanted a Southern-style breakfast with proper biscuits (as opposed to the Waffle House and Pilsbury kind I had been eating thus far. Sorry.)
After a little internet research, I narrowed down the good breakfast joints in the city to a list of three, but there was one place that seemed to stand out above the rest for its homemade biscuits: Bryant’s Breakfast.
I never go off written reviews alone, as experiences can be very subjective, so having found several photos of the food at this place, I decided it definitely looked good enough to head off the highway for. And I wasn’t wrong.
Here I enjoyed a HUGE plate of scrambled eggs, Southern-style sausage, three homemade biscuits, grits and gravy. The biscuits were buttery and delicious, but also big and filling, so it was a struggle to finish all three (I still did). I also tried gravy for the first time. This isn’t like the kind of gravy I’m used to at home, which you would only ever pour over a roast meat dinner or some chip-shop chips. This was a thick, gloopy, peppery gravy which was pale in colour. That isn’t to say I didn’t like it (I ate almost the whole tub), I just wasn’t used to the flavour. Grits unfortunately are just not for me, so I didn’t eat any of those.
It’s worth a trip here for the biscuits alone, but the portion sizes also offer great value for money.
